how do i know what size to order?summer sun hat vintage bonnet vintage sun bonnet baby bonnet

our bonnets come in 6 sizes.  our smallest size fits most newborns and our largest size fits most kids ages 4 and up-- and adults!  although we have made rough estimates as far as age of the child they'll fit, there is a very large range of head sizes within each age range.  this means that the best and most reliable way to size a bonnet for your darlin' guy or gal is to measure their head circumference. this is the same measurement that the pediatrician will do when your child is very small.  if you have a flexible measuring tape, use that.  if not, just get a piece of string.  wrap the tape or string loosely around the widest part of your little one's head.  this will be across the forehead and around the widest part of the back of the head.  if you're using the measuring tape, you'll know right away what your measurement is (we use english measurements) and can correspond that to the correct size.  if you're using a piece of string, you'll need to measure the string.

extra extra small: 14-16", usually fits premie - 3 months (this bonnet fits newborns)

extra small: 16-17.25”, usually fits 3-6 months

small: 17-18.25”, usually fits 6-12 months

medium: 18-19.25”, usually fits 12-24 months

large: 19-21.25”, usually fits 2-3t

extra large: 21”+, usually fits 3t- adult (yes, adult!  the size is flexible enough to snap down to fit a kid and extend out to fit most (but not all) adult heads)

MEASURE YOUR LITTLE ONE'S HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE FOR THE BEST FIT.

what’s the difference between a solBonnet & a modBonnet?

our modBonnet is our highest end bonnet.  it features our exclusive arch-seamtm design.  it has our longest, most protective, and most stable brim.  it provides truly unparalleled sun protection.  because of the excellent brim stability, it’s well suited for water-based summertime activities such as days at the pool, ocean-side excursions, and boat trips.  the brim stability also means that it will stay out even on windy days.  our modBonnets have a generous and very flexible fit.  most mamas find that our bonnets fit far past the stated age range on the hats.

our solbonnet has a slightly shorter brim—by about ½”.  because our solBonnet does not have any interfacing fabric for brim stability, it has a floppier, garden-hat style brim, with a slightly wider flare around the head.  it tends to give a bit more room over the top of the head, and to have a bit less brim stability.  because it has less brim stability, we recommend it for dry summertime activities.  it also has a slightly different fit, and will fit truer to the stated size range (of course, ALWAYS measure your little one’s head to get the correct fit).  the best feature of the solBonnet is that there’s no seam to interrupt our darling fabrics!

what's the difference between an ecoBonnet & a modBonnet?

almost nothing!  the ecoBonnets are IDENTICAL to our modBonnets except that they are made with GOTS certified organically grown cottons.  You get the same brim, same amazing functionality with the added benefit of organic fabrics.  sweet!

how do i know if my bonnet fits correctly?

a UB2 bonnet should fit your little one snugly on his or her head, comfortably under the chin (using one OR two snaps), while still giving good coverage and  shading in the back and fully covering the ears-- all the way to the bottom of the ear lobes.  If the straps are too short to fasten, then the bonnet is too small.  the pictures on our site show the proper bonnet fit. If your bonnet does not fit, please contact us right away.  we normally allow one free re-ship (within the US; international customers will need to pay shipping charges) for sizing issues as long as you still have all the tags and have not washed the bonnet.  we truly want you to LOVE your UB2 and will do what it takes to make that happen!

what size is the bonnet I currently have?

we do not put size tags on our reversible hats because they'd be a little... well... ugly.  and as sweet as that is, it sometimes causes problems when you forget what size you have, but know you need the next one up.  of course, if you order when logged in, you'll be able to track your sizes that way. but, if you forgot to login or didn't wanna or bought elsewhere or received a gift?  we can help!

it's complicated to measure/size used hats because different washing methods (including detergent and whether the hat is line dried or tumble dried, and on what setting, and whether or not it has been ironed after washing) lead to different shrinkages.  but, the following measurements of NEW hats will give you a good guide for sizing the hat you have.  if this doesn't help, though, you can always text us or email us and we can look up your orders, even if you weren't logged in.  :-)

xxs-- brim depth from edge to seam: 2.75-3" ~ back panel height from base to top of curve: 4.25-4.5"

xs-- brim depth from edge to seam: 3-3.25" ~ back panel height from base to top of curve: 5.25"

s-- brim depth from edge to seam: 3.25-3.5" ~ back panel height from base to top of curve: 5.5"

m-- brim depth from edge to seam: 3.25-3.5" ~ back panel height from base to top of curve: 6-6.25"

l-- brim depth from edge to seam: 4-4.25" ~ back panel height from base to top of curve: 6.25-6.5"

anything larger would be our XL size

how should i wash my bonnet?

although it's best to wash your bonnet by hand and line dry it (or dry it flat on top of your washer or dryer), you can toss it into the machine with your other wash and it'll do just fine. wash only using COLD WATER, and if you place the hat in the dryer, dry it on low. use a warm, cotton-setting, steam iron to press your bonnet if necessary. we like to dry out hats flat because it saves energy and they don't need to be pressed.  they'll have a softened, worn look as opposed to a crisp press, but that's what we (personally) prefer.  if you love the crisp press, just run a steam iron over the bonnet when it's slighlty damp or spritz it & press.  usually pressing the back of the bonnet and the brim will polish it up nicely.  make sure not to hit the little ribbon tag with your iron or it can melt.

if you choose to machine wash and dry your bonnet, you'll get a bit more shrinkage the first time... about 4% (sometimes as much as 6%, but not enough to make a properly-fitted (according to our website inch-based sizing charts) bonnet too small).  hand washing will result in slightly less shrinkage.  if your bonnet shrinks, you can put it on your little one while slightly damp and it will re-shape to his or her head.  that might sound weird, but on a hot day in the sun, a damp bonnet can help keep baby cool!

please note that wash shrinkage and fading are not considered manufacturer defects.  while you can machine wash your bonnet on cold and put it in the dryer without it causing any damage at all to the hat, doing so (as it does to any cotton fabric) WILL cause your hat to FADE and to SHRINK.  this is normal for 100% cotton fabrics.  please understand that it is not a manufacturer's defect, and it is not something covered by our guarantee.  if you're worried about shrinkage or fading, please handwash your bonnet and line dry it.

do you sell wholesale?

yes! check out our wholesale account application and bring UB2 to your boutique!

do you sell your pattern? family wearing sun hats ear hats wildthings winter sun hat winter bonnet

no, unfortunately, we do not sell our pattern. it's an original, copyrighted design.  You can, of course, make one for your own personal use, but you may NOT make the bonnets and sell them-- even if you draw the pattern yourself by looking at our bonnets.  please play nice!  UB2 is owned by a work-at-home mom... we're not your average faceless corporation.  thank YOU for understanding and respecting intellectual property-- and for purchasing from the site that started the Urban Baby Bonnet revolution!  :-)  If price is truly an issue, contact us.  we never let someone go without a bonnet just because they can't afford it.

where do you get your fabrics?

we search the globe to bring you the very best, hippest, and coolest fabrics out there.  check your local quilt shop if you're looking for something to match your new UB2!

can i return my bonnet?

yes, if your bonnet is in NEW AND UNWORN condition, and if you have retained ALL the original packaging, including the tag and protective sleeve.  we do NOT accept returns on hats that have been worn, washed, dampened, soiled, dirtied, exposed to pets, pet hair, strange odors, or smoke; please do not ask for a return authorization number if your child has worn the hat.  if you try on the hat, and it is dirtied in the process, we cannot accept a return; please try on for size when your child is clean and dry and is not eating.  returned hats that are soiled will be donated to charity, and will not be refunded.

what happens if my bonnet has a defect, such as a snap that won't snap?

we do check every bonnet three times before it begins its journey to you, but even so, sometimes, mistakes happen.  if you have a bonnet with a manufacturing error that appears within the first 30 days of your purchase, please contact us with your proof of purchase and we'll send you a pre-paid return label.  we'll then either fix or replace your bonnet, at our discretion.  after 30 days, contact us for a RA number and you can return the bonnet to us at your expense.  we will then either repair or replace it at our discretion.  we guarantee our bonnets against manufacturing defects FOR LIFE.  all you need to do to take advantage of the guarantee is contact us for an RA number and send the bonnet back to us. we will need to see proof of purchase if you did not purchase the bonnet from our website.  please see our guarantee for more information.

do you have a restocking fee?

no!  never!  we will never charge you a fee to take back a bonnet in new and unworn condition.  that said, we do not refund the original shipping charges and/or costs.

what if i just don't like my bonnet or i want a different pattern?

we do not offer refunds in such cases unless your bonnet is in new and unworn condition.  if it is, then please contact us for an RA number and you can send your bonnet back to us at your expense.  we'll then refund your purchase price, less the initial shipping charges or the initial shipping COST if you happened to use a coupon code.  please note that we cannot refund shipping charges and that any shipping charges will be deducted from your refund amount.

please note that we CANNOT accept returns on hats that have been worn, washed, dampened, soiled, dirtied, exposed to pets, pet hair, strange odors, or smoke; please do not ask for a return authorization number if your child has worn the hat.  if you try on the hat, and it is dirtied in the process, we cannot accept a return; please try on for size when your child is clean and dry.  returned hats that are soiled (or that have been cleaned) will be donated to charity, and will not be refunded.
